El Cuerpo
This week we are starting a new unit on bodies. Student learned the song "Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas, Pies" (Head, Shoulders, Knees, Toes) and fun song about a boy named Juanito who likes to dance. Students also had a chance to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather and go outside to create their own life-size body. Students traced each other on the cement with chalk and then labeled the body parts. These pictures show KE 1st graders tracing and labeling.

Familias
We are starting a new unit on families this week. Students are learning the names for people in their family, mamá, papá, hermano, hermana, abuela, and abuelo. Students drew a family portrait and labeled everybody in their family. We started reading Cuadros de Familia or Family Pictures by the artist Carmen Lomas Garza. We will continue to look more at families in the United States and Spanish speaking countries.

La Ropa
We have been studying about clothing and clothing descriptions. The past week we have learned vocabulary and how to describe what color clothes are. We played a "Guess Who" game describing different people in the classroom and sang a song about clothes. A new game we played was "Upset the Laundry Basket" I gave each student a description and they had to find the piece of clothing in my laundry basket. This week we will also be doing collages with magazine pictures to describe more types of clothing. This picture is of first grade students in Kalona playing the laundry basket game.

Dia de Tres Reyes
¡Bienvenidos! Welcome back to Spanish class after a great holiday break. Before the break we discussed Las Posadas a holiday that acted out the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. This week, even though most of our holiday celebrations have ended in Spanish speaking countries many people are still celebrating. On January 6 many countries celebrate Dia de Los Tres Reyes, or Three Kings Day. Students learned that children will leave out their shoes at night so that the kings will come and give them presents just like they brought Baby Jesus presents. We read a story about Three Kings Day and played a game that had to do with Pan de Reyes (bread of the Kings). We also made crowns to remember the three kings. Mrs. Simon's third grade class is modeling their crowns!

La Ropa
The past couple of weeks we have been talking about la ropa, or clothes. Students had a chance to create their own outfit using new vocabulary and even got to dress up in crazy clothes and describe their outfit. Students sang a song about clothing vocabulary and learned how to describe clothing. We learned that in English you would say "a red shirt" and in Spanish you would say "camisa roja" or shirt red. Ask your child about his/her outfit at home. Next week we will start talking about Las Posadas, a Christmas celebration in Spanish speaking countries.
